Discovering Sardinia: Bringing the Blue Zone Home

ree

I recently returned from an inspiring holiday to Sardinia, one of the world’s renowned Blue Zones, where living to 100 isn't just a possibility but a total reality. This trip sparked a reflection on how we can integrate some of Sardinia’s magic into our everyday lives.

Movement as a Lifestyle

In Sardinia, movement isn't exercise- it's a way of life. People naturally incorporate walking, gardening, and other physical activities into their daily routines. At home, we can embrace this by choosing stairs over elevators, having walking meetings, or enjoying walks in the park or beach. You don't have to always meet at the pub!!!

Community Connection

Sardinians have truly mastered the art of community. They gather, share meals, and support one another like family. Our host was so accomodating to help us. They are all so friendly. We can nurture these connections by hosting regular family dinners or having friends over. Even volunteering. Community gives us connection and this gives us joy.

Mindful Eating

The Sardinians eat with intention- small portions, homemade meals, and a focus on savouring every bite. A good reminder to slow down when eating. At home, we can practice mindful eating by focusing on our food, be grateful for the meal, avoid distractions, and enjoying each bite. Eay tip - put your knife and fork down between each mouthful so you are not scoffing your food but intentionally eating

.

Nature’s Harmony

Flowers upon flowers upon flowers. I don't know if this is something they do intentionally but I certainly noticed the abundance of flowers everywhere. feeding bees and supporting the ecosystem. Create your own green oasis, not just greenery but flowers even if it’s a small herb garden,

Purpose and Relaxation

Of course they have siestas, daily. They take time to relax. A 4 hour break in the middle of the day is sadly not our life style but that is why a 20 minute meditation works, and it is like 3-4hours of deep rest on the brain.

Journal, engage in hobbies that bring joy, find what fuels your soul and make time for it.

Your Blue Zone

Creating your own Blue Zone at home is about small, consistent changes that lead to a healthier, happier life. Start with one area and watch how it transforms your well-being.

I’d love to hear how you’re bringing these principles into your life. Feel free to share your journey or thoughts with me!
